Process

From your initial enquiry to the final delivery, we take the time at every stage to ensure you are happy with the process and that the final result meets or exceeds your expectations.

  • Let’s talk about your vision

We are more than happy to meet either at our showroom or on site to discuss the requirements of your project.  Otherwise, we can talk over the phone and you can share drawings or photographs with us via email. If you aren’t sure of exactly what you want, browse our gallery of furniture we have created for inspiration. We can also provide advice on design, style, budget and finish options.

  • We prepare an estimate

Once the brief is finalised, we will provide you with an estimate for approval. This estimate is based on the finishes selected at that time. If the finishes change at a later date, the estimate may need to be revised.  We try to be extremely accurate in our estimates to avoid any surprises.

  • Site meet up & measure up

For some custom-designed pieces, particularly ‘built-in’ joinery, a site visit and final measure is very important. While on site we are also better able to determine if the proportions and style of the drawing are correct for the space.  Any alterations to these can be discussed at this time.

  • Preparation of scale drawings or a 3D model

Once the design has been agreed upon, a scale drawing or 3D computer generated model will be drawn up for your approval. The use of to scale drawings is a very important step in the process. It presents a visual interpretation of the item of furniture checking proportions and functionality.

  • Final selection of materials and finishes

A great deal of care is taken in the selection of timber and finishes for all the furniture made at Smith & Gray. We hand select the timber used for each and every item. We are more than happy to explain the various finish options (such as lacquer, 2 pac colours or clears or French polish) and provide samples to help with your decision.

  • Manufacture and delivery

You are welcome to come to the workshop to see first-hand the care and attention that goes into crafting your custom-made furniture. On completion, each piece is carefully quality checked ensuring the goods are flawless. Once we are satisfied, you will be contacted to arrange a convenient time for delivery or installation. A Smith & Gray staff member will always personally complete the installation/delivery and carry out a final check and clean of the piece to ensure your satisfaction.
